WolframAlpha has arrived

Two months ago I wrote a post about a new type of “search engine” called WolframAlpha and it is now up and running as of Monday, May 18th.

WolframAlpha is referred to as a “computational knowledge engine” by its creator because it computes the answer to a question based on some sort of understanding of the question. This is very different from the way Google displays search results.

Here are some of the query results I got with WolframAlpha:

Query Result
What is the largest prime number? There is no largest prime. (Largest known prime: 2^43112609-1)
factor x^2 + x - 6 (x-2)(x+3)
What is the heaviest element? ununoctium
How far is Tokyo from Ottawa? 10344 Km
Who is the president of Taiwan? Ma Ying-jeou (Start date: 20-05-2008)

Are your internet connection settings holding you back?

Data is transferred over the internet using the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) which provides fast and reliable transfer of data. Your computer is set up to adhere to this protocol but the truth is that the default TCP settings on your computer may not be optimized for your internet connection to allow for the maximum throughput of data.

The reason that these TCP settings are usually left untouched by users is because they are hidden within your computer’s registry and are hard to find and hard to change. In general this is a good thing because if you don’t know what you are doing and alter the registry settings, it can have detrimental results to your computer’s health. So what we need is a computer application that will allow us to easily and safely alter the TCP settings in the computer’s registry.

TCP Optimizer

TCP Optimizer is a windows program that fits this need and helps find the optimal TCP settings for a computer and changes them as necessary. It’s a free program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. The TCP Optimizer is targeted towards broadband internet connections but it may be helpful for tuning other internet connections such as dial up. One thing to keep in mind is that this program will be altering your computer’s registry settings so it is advisable to backup your current TCP settings. This program allows you to easily backup your default settings by going to “File » Backup current settings”. The default settings you save can be restored at any time if necessary.

WAMP! Turn your computer into a web server

What is a web server?

When people think of web servers they might imagine something like a room full of gigantic computers. But the truth is that a web server is any computer that delivers web pages and files to the internet. So that means even your computer can be turned into a web server by installing server software and having an active internet connection. It is pretty cool to think that by installing some free software, you will be able to share stuff with people all over the world.

Why do I need a web server?

There are many reasons to have web server software installed on your computer.

  • Web developers often install a web server on their computer so they can use it as a testing ground for their projects. In most cases you can test simple HTML pages on your computer in editors like Dreamweaver or FrontPage, but you can’t test pages and applications that are built upon more complex languages like PHP, mySQL, or ASP without a web server.
  • Having a web server gives you a quick and easy way to share stuff with people. If you want to distribute a file of some sort to your friends or co-workers, you can load that file onto a temporary webpage where they can download or view the file after you send them a link to the page.
  • The most obvious reason to install server software is in order to host a website from your computer. The one problem with setting up a web server on your computer is that your computer must always be on and connected to the internet for your website to be online. But the great thing about web server software is that it does not need a powerful computer at all so you can take your 5 year old computer that is sitting in the basement, install WAMP, connect it to the internet, and you will have your very own personal web server. If you are serious about starting a website then you may want to consider renting space from a professional web hosting company (~100$/year) because they run their own servers that are guaranteed to be online 99.9% of the time. But if you just want to test things out, learn a bit about HTML, PHP, mySQL, and have some fun with server software then WAMP is a great way to get started. Did I mention its free!

Gmail Labs keeps rolling out new features

Gmail Labs is the test bed for new features in Gmail. There have been a lot of great new features available for use in Gmail lately, but it struck me that a lot of Gmail users probably don’t know about Gmail Labs or how to activate some of these useful add-ons.

How do you get to Gmail Labs?

Once you are logged into your Gmail account, you can access Gmail Labs by clicking on the “Settings” tab in the top menu and then clicking “Labs” within the Settings menu.

After accessing Gmail Labs, you will see a long list of features that you can choose to enable. Some are just for fun but some features offer great additional functionality to your Gmail account.
