Free registration for CES 2010

What is CES?

CES

CES stands for the International Consumer Electronics Show which is the largest technology event each year and is held in Las Vegas, Nevada in January. CES lasts for several days and showcases new technology products, seminars and speakers. The event always attracts high profile names in the electronics field, such as speakers like Bill Gates, and it’s an opportunity for companies to showcase a variety of new products. Many products that now seem standard in many homes, or even obsolete, have been introduced at these shows including the VCR, DVD, CD players, HDTV, DVRs, and gaming machines like the Xbox. Even the classic video game Pong was introduced at CES.

Is registration really free?

Yes, you can register to attend the event for free before October 1, 2009. But unfortunately there is also a catch. CES is not open to the general public and you must be in the consumer electronics industry to be eligible to attend the show. Two forms of identification are required on-site (one photo ID and one proof of business affiliation/business card).

Here are some general guidelines for attending the event:

  • To attend CES you must be employed in the tech industry or be a tech reporter/press representative
  • Spouses and children may not attend the International CES
  • Students can only attend on January 10, 2010 and will be charged $100 US

As a tech geek I have always wanted to attend this event and am planning a trip down to Las Vegas for the 2010 event. And if for some reason I can’t attend the event, then no harm done because it cost me absolutely nothing!

tunesBag… How is this legal?

I submitted my email to tunesBag about 3 month ago and today I have finally been sent an invitation to try out this beta service. My first reaction after testing out tunesBag is… HOW IS THIS LEGAL?

tunesBag allows you to upload your music collection to an online database so you can listen to your music from any internet connected computer. So far this is not that shocking. But the interesting thing about tunesBag is that you can also listen to music that is uploaded by other users! So this basically means that you can do a search, find the song you want to listen to, and listen to it for free. How does this make sense in a world where the founders of Pirate Bay were sent to jail for running an online search engine because it sometimes returned illegal content? The short answer is that it does not make sense.

Not surprisingly, the first FAQ on the tunesBag website is “Is tunesBag a legal service?“.

The answer from tunesBag is: “Yes, tunesBag can only be used to manage music you already have. You can share your library with friends according to the law in Austria (Privatkopie).

XBMC - An open source media center

I have been busy setting up a Home Theatre where my computer is connected to the TV so that I can watch all my movies, videos, and music on the big screen. This setup is not an overly complicated task in itself but I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect Media Center software to organize my extensive collection of movies, TV shows, and music so that they can be presented in a user friendly and visually pleasing way.

What is Media Center software?

When your computer is hooked up to the TV you can do everything you normally can on a computer. This is great for browsing the internet and other stuff but I really wanted a program that could catalogue all of the media on my computer and display it in a nice interface so I could click and view any movie, TV show, or song. Basically, I was looking for a program like iTunes that could handle music and videos and play almost any time of file format including DVD’s that are ripped directly to my home server in native DVD format.
